Mental Trainer and habits

Being a Mental Trainer, that is, a mental trainer, I often work with my customers on their habits. It is very interesting to note how a simple reflection can have a great impact on people's lives . I want to share this reflection with you.

In general, the effects in the short period of many of the things we do become exactly the opposite if we look at the long term instead.

In other words: the consequence of our actions immediately has an opposite effect on us of what happens if we consider a wider period.

With some examples this concept immediately becomes clearer. They are examples that, in my Mental Trainer activity, they really happened to me (the Mental Trainer does not work only with athletes!).

We set the fact that, to download the tension and find some comfort, every evening I eat not very healthy foods (the classic "garbage" food) and I drink a few too many glass. In the immediate time I can feel pleasure and the feeling of gratification. Try to project this long -term behavior. What happens if I commit myself in this way every evening? It is very likely, indeed it is sure, that I will run into health problems that certainly will not improve my initial situation.

Another example is represented by shopping: also in this case, to find relief from daily tensions, spending my money in stores or by dedicating myself to online shopping. In the immediate time, gratification is guaranteed: I always wear clothes at the latest fashion, I have in my hands the last technological gadgets or the latest book released (which maybe I will not even read, but this is another story ...). Also in this case, if we project this long -term behavior, the exact opposite could occur: spending many (and if they were too many?) Money could put my financial situation at risk causing serious negative impacts that will worsen my initial situation. Or I could fall into the dangerous compulsive shopping trap.

As you can see, in the face of immediate satisfaction, we run the risk of a significant worsening in a long -term perspective. If we manage to be a little far -sighted we can avoid this risk.

The good news is that this concept also works for things, let's say so, positive . The work of the Mental Trainer is in fact oriented, among other things, to increase the awareness of people on functional habits.

If today, for example, I decide to train, it is likely that at the end of training I will have some pain or sore. But in the long run, training me constantly will allow me to be healthy.

The same can be said, making another example, about reading. If I decide to read at least 10 pages of a book every day before falling asleep, it is very likely that nothing will happen in the immediate. I could even accuse a little tiredness (we could therefore talk about a worsening of the initial situation). But if we project this long -term habit, it is very simple to understand which benefits we would get many more books than our compatriots (considering statistical data).

Mental Trainer of yourself

Now take a few minutes and make a short list of the things you usually do. If you write it on paper it is definitely better.

Make a quick roundup and, without focusing too much, mentally summarize the short -term effect of these things, of these habits. This easy exercise reminds you why you do these things.

Now, of the things you have listed, try to imagine the long -term effects. Then answer these questions sincerely:

  • Are there any things you do that in the long term could cause you some problems?
  • Are there any things that in short improve your situation but in the long run they could worsen it?
  • Is there anything that would be better to change?
  • Do you have any habit that could bring you where you don't want to go?
  • Could it be useful to stop doing some of these things?
  • Could it be useful to do something new?

I suggest you periodically do this exercise in order to always have a clear idea of ​​the place where your habits will bring you. The best results are obtained by doing this job together with someone, maybe a good friend or a good coach.
