Self Talk: Your Secret Weapon to Winning

Self Talk - Mental Coaching

Self-talk in sports is one of the most underrated yet most powerful mental weapons you can use.

Training your self-talk and turning it into your ally is possible. Research demonstrates its enormous effectiveness. Alex Hutchinson, in his book "Endure," describes an experiment conducted with a group of cyclists: those who used self-talk strategies performed better than those who hadn't incorporated self-talk into their training routine. How much better? A whopping 18% in just two weeks .

Self-Talk: How to Structure It

There are no hard and fast rules for building a functional self-talk. The best thing you can do is experiment to see what works best for you. Talking to yourself in the first person ("I can do this") or in the second person ("You are strong") has different impacts. Some studies show that addressing yourself in the second person can increase the authority of the statement and enhance its effects.

There are two types of self talk:

  • Motivational: you tell yourself something that empowers you, that gives you energy (“I'm ready, I'm determined”)
  • Instructive: you give yourself practical advice on the gesture or strategy (“Breathe, concentrate, manage the rhythm”)

An essential element is repetition . Self-talk must become your mantra. If you use it sporadically, it won't work. Only daily practice will allow you to benefit from this powerful tool.

Build Your Empowering Phrase

Here's the 6-step path to creating your own empowering self-talk:

1. Context : What is the challenge or goal you face?
2. Key characteristic : What quality do you need to best manage that situation? Strength, courage, clarity of mind, resilience…
3. Specific action : What is the concrete behavior that brings you closer to achieving it? Training, studying, competing…
4. Method : How do you want to put that action into practice? With commitment, with energy, with serenity…
5. Time reference : When do you want to act? Every day, always, in competition…
6. Final sentence : Put all the elements together:

I AM (characteristic from point 2) AND (action from point 3 + modality from point 4 + temporal reference from point 5)

Self Talk: When and How to Use It

Self-talk is most effective when used at key moments in athletic performance: before a competition to prepare the mind, during a performance to maintain focus and motivation, and during training to consolidate learning and perseverance. In these situations, repeat your phrase with conviction and confidence (doing it out loud has a greater effect).

  • In competition : Use your sentence to maintain focus and manage pressure.
  • In training : Use self-talk to keep your level of commitment and concentration high.
  • After the performance : self-talk becomes a tool for regenerating mental and physical energy.
  • In difficult times : Your mantra helps you cultivate self-esteem and keep disempowering thoughts at bay.

Theory alone gets you nowhere; practice is what makes the difference. Incorporating self-talk into your routine means training, day after day, the most important thing: your mind.
