Self-talk, also known as inner dialogue, is a key element in athletic performance. It's no coincidence that it's an important component of the mental training I give my clients. Numerous studies have confirmed that conscious and targeted use of this tool can lead to significant improvements in athletic performance.

  2. Instructive : Specific technical details, such as “Keep your elbow high” or “Keep your weight forward” guide and improve technique.
  3. Decision-making : Supports quick and confident decisions during performance, reducing hesitation.

  • Personalization : Create short, specific phrases tailored to your needs and your sport.
  • Consistent practice : Integrate self-talk into your training routine to make it an automatic response in competition.
  • External perspective : Using the second or third person in your self-talk can amplify its impact, as if the words were from a coach (“Hang in there!” instead of “I’m hanging in there!”).
  • Process focus : Focus on the technical elements and the “here and now,” rather than the end result.

Self-talk, when used correctly, boosts confidence, reduces anxiety, and improves concentration. It's a powerful tool for enhancing performance, not just in sports but also at a professional level. Because, ultimately, there's not much difference in mindset between an athletic performance and an important presentation to a potential client or a business negotiation.
