Objective, purpose and unhappiness
Objective and purpose: it is easy to confuse. We clarify, we discover why they are linked to unhappiness and, above all, what we can do.
Gallup is a research-based polling and consulting firm specializing in workplace and consumer trends. It is best known for its polling, public opinion monitoring, and in-depth analysis on topics such as politics, business, and social issues.
A research by Gallup about unhappiness and dissatisfaction between 2020 and 2022 tells us interesting things:
- All over the world, about 4 out of 10 people (41%) consider their lives unsatisfactory
- 58% of Americans claim to not be able to express their potential
- The most commonly reported dissatisfaction concerns the professional area, followed by relationships and personal health and physical form
- People aged between 25 and 34 are more likely to feel unrealized
Why are people unhappy?
People can be unhappy for a series of different reasons: from the lack of fulfillment in their life to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. People can be unhappy because of traumatic events, such as the death of a loved one or a disease. Often unhappiness is attributable to a lack of purpose, a feeling of insignificance or a lack of connection with other people. Whatever reason, unhappiness can cause negative thoughts and behaviors and can make it difficult to enjoy life.
People are unhappy, more commonly, for other reasons; It is precisely on these that we dwell. People tend to do not have a direction, they do not feel in control of their lives, they live most of the time in reactive mode and very rarely in proactive mode. Instead of following a desired direction, they undergo the choices of others. They do not have a purpose and even objectives. Instead they survive to create the life they want.
The goal
People do not define goals for a series of reasons. Some may feel overwhelmed and anxious by the thought of having results to commit themselves, while others may not feel motivated or quite safe to face something new. Others may believe that they have no tools or resources necessary to do it. In many cases people simply don't know what they want. Still others could simply fear failure or not see any tangible benefit from the definition and pursuit of a goal.
Objective or purpose?
Objective and purpose are two terms often used interchangeable, but have different meanings. A goal is a desired result that a person or group of people want to achieve. The objectives are generally focused on the short term, while the aim is long -term and is the reason why someone is doing something. The objectives provide the management and allow people to measure their success, while the purpose provides meaning and motivation to achieve the objectives defined. In other words, the aim represents why I do what I do, while the objectives can be considered as I do it.
How to define your purpose
Defining one's purpose is certainly not an easy task. It takes time, commitment and desire to get into discussions. Here are some suggestions:
- Reflect on your values, passions , and strengths. Take some time to reflect on yourself and what you value most in life, what you're most passionate about, and what your abilities are.

- Ask for help from the people closest to you, those you really trust.
- Reflect on your values and life goals: Take some time to reflect on what would make you feel most fulfilled. Consider which values are at the core of who you are and how you want to live your life.
